From this week's [livejournal.com profile] thefridayfive:

1. What do you like or dislike about autumn?
I absolutely love autumn - the smell of the air, the colors of the leaves, the cooler temperatures, the migrating birds and butterflies. Nothing quite rivals a sunny, fall day, except maybe a fresh, spring day. :-)

2. Have you raked leaves into a pile just to jump in them?
Yes, indeed.

3. Have you ever carved a pumpkin and how did it turn out?
I try to do one every year! I learned from the very best (my mom) - a big, snaggle-toothed grin with no nose makes for a wickedly amused pumpkin-face.

4. Have you ever eaten anything made from pumpkins other than pie?
Yep. Just last week I made a pumpkin-shrimp bisque (I found the recipe at Epicurious.com here), and everyone loved it. My mom used to make pumpkin cookies with raisins and white icing when we were kids, too. They're still one of my very favorite kinds of cookies.

5. Where is a good spot to see the leaves change color where you live?
I suppose the Poconos would be the place, but it's a couple of hours north-west of here, and the leaves may already be changing. I always liked the look of the trees planted on Millersville University's campus in the fall, especially when they began to drop their leaves. You'd be walking to class, and it would be raining down red and yellow leaves everywhere - just gorgeous.

In other news, the MLS playoffs begin tonight with Chicago hosting DC United. I'm rooting for the Fire, since as a Revolution fan, I'd rather New England faced them later on rather than face DC again. Of course, that's all dependent on the Revolution having success against the MetroStars in the next two games. Ah, the pressure!

The Hunter's Moon is tonight - see it to believe it.

In other news, my brother might land a job in Boston, which would mean that I'd buy me some Revolution season tickets. With a free place to stay, what's to stop me? Except that there's no way I'm driving straight from Philly to Boston on an every-other week basis... but I would take the train. Less hassle, get some reading done, yeah, I'm there. Go, brother, go!

From this week's [livejournal.com profile] thefridayfive:

1. What sport do you most enjoy watching on television (or tolerate most)?

I enjoy watching soccer (understatement).

2. If you could be really, really good at one sport (we're talking world elite here), what would it be?

Um, soccer? Not much money in it for women, but the coolness factor trumps that.

3. Have you ever been active in some form of sports?

Intramural volleyball a loooong time ago

4. Would you rather be a computer geek or a sports geek?

These days I'm happy if I can successfully download and install a program without screwing things up. I'm definitely a bigger sports geek now.

5. What teams do you cheer for?

Soccer: The US Men's National Team and a couple Major League Soccer teams - New England Revolution, Kansas City Wizards

Baseball: Philadelphia Phillies

Don't forget: US vs Mexico, Saturday @ 7:30pm on ESPN Classic and Telemundo. Talk about a rivalry, kids; it doesn't get any bigger than this in the US.

So I just turned down a job today. (what?! Beggar's can't be choosers!) I'm sorry, but I didn't go to college for four and a half years just to make 17k with no benefits. ::sigh::

There is one job that I'm really holding out for that I applied to yesterday, but I don't want to say anything about it so as not to jinx it. I'm generally not superstitious (though the Revs did lose each time I didn't wear my soccer roller ball bands... hmmm), but it's one of those things that makes a person feel like they have some control in their lives, I guess.

Meanwhile, when I'm generally feeling down, I like to watch this video clip. Keep your eye on the bouncing ball, now... it's sick how they're so smooth, yo. And, check out the new soccer ads by Nike if you haven't had the chance. Yay, marketing for soccer. Now if I could just get other people I know into it, we could have a real party come September 3rd and for the World Cup games. Ah, pipe dreams.

Anyway, I'm for the park now. Can't let all of this beautiful weather go to waste.

ETA: Whoops, didn't go to the park as I've just heard about the job I want. Yay, Wyoming! I might just see you soon!

Ahhhh! Why didn't I take Spanish in high school?

Anyway, it's Estados Unidos y Panama at three pm Eastern on Univision.

Go USA! :-D

Oh my god.

The US National Team is trying to kill me. That's the most tightly wound I've ever been while reading play-by-plays. Just... holy mackerel. Heck, add that to last Saturday's last-minute heroics by the Revs, and I'm a cardiac case waiting to happen.

But at the end of the day,
I can still say,
"Go USA!"

I'll keep the rest of my cheesy, yet totally heartfelt, sentiments to myself - I promise.

Wow. So is Mexico playing its B team, or is South Africa really that good?

Why am I staying up to watch this, anyway? Stupid time zones.

You know, the US trounced Cuba last night 4-1 (well, trounced is really going too far), and now Cuba's going to be wolloped by hurricane Dennis.

Geez, enough already. Leave them alone!

le weekend

May. 15th, 2005 04:02 pm

Long time, no post. Eh, c'est la vie. Now that it's been nice outside and such, I just haven't been around to fire up the old 'puter for blogging. I haven't watched television in a long time, either. Frankly, I don't think I've been missing anything in that department.

Well, I shouldn't say that I haven't watched any TV. I've been watching soccer on the weekends, and when I do go online, it's been to read the articles and stats at MLSnet.com. My favorite team (The New England Revolution) has been doing a fantastic job of staying on top of the league and entertaining their fans with great games.

This weekend, too, I took my family to see An Evening With Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood (you know, the guys from Whose Line Is It Anyway?) as an early Father's Day present for my dad. Oh, so much love. We laughed the entire time, and yes, it was all improv. My family really isn't the theater-going type, but we had a blast.

This morning we went for a walk along the canal and saw all sorts of wildlife, including two water snakes swimming and a family of baby wood ducks. The ducks and snakes weren't anywhere near each other, which was good news for the ducklings. :-)

So here's to a great weekend. The pain of having to go to work tomorrow is significantly dampened this week because I've got Election Day off. I think I'll make a date with Wal-Mart or Target to see about getting a new bicycle helmet, and, if the weather's nice, go for a little hike.

What can I say? Life's good. :-)

Apr. 30th, 2005 01:19 pm

Slept ten hours last night(!). Compared to my usual 6.5 hours, that was just... decadent.

Of course, I had some really wonky dreams. The one I remember most clearly dealt with soccer, a game of volleyball, and a peacock. The peacock kind of snuck up on me, but after I calmed down, we were cool. I did the peacock "meow" at it, and it meowed back until my old college roommate's father came upon the scene and was like, why are you meowing at my peacock? There's just no rational response to a question like that, so I went back to playing volleyball.

Sometimes I really wonder about myself. :-P

So it's Soccer Saturday, and I'm going insane. My parents went out to a motorcycle thingy for the day, my brother's at work, the cats are asleep, and it's raining buckets. I jogged around the house a little bit, then burned a CD for my car. I'm too wound up to watch a movie or read a book (instead I'll take my energy out on typing in my journal for a few minutes - ha!). Gah!

I suppose in the meantime I can link something, so here's a nice, little interview with Drew Carey about why he likes soccer.

Is it four o'clock yet?

omg soccer

Apr. 15th, 2005 08:53 pm

Man, I love the weekends in spring. We've got gorgeous warm weather and soccer. It's like weekdays are just the blurry spell between the wonderful, sunny, soccer days of real life.

::happy sigh::

So glad to have stayed up to watch tonight's game. Three more points for the US! Woo!

So the US lost to Mexico today with a score of 2-1. Life goes on. I do feel that we put a whole lot of effort into this game; we had a slow start, made a couple errors in the first half that cost us, but as a whole, I liked the energy that our side had and the show of determination. I think we had Mexico on edge the entire game, even when they were up by two. It was not an easy win for them.

I know that my heart was in my throat the entire time, anway. Of course, that just gave me more room for candy. :^)

And now, from [livejournal.com profile] hp_memage, a Harry Potter meme behind the cut. )

ETA: Whoa. At least our game wasn't like today's match between Mali and Togo. Bwah.

You know when you're so tired you start to see things move out of the edges of your eyes, and you quick-look-stare at the spot in the corner where you could have sworn something darted past a second ago?

Yeah, I'm that tired. I can't seem to stay up beyond ten o'clock these days, even on the weekend. But! Tomorrow is a brand new, shiny day wherein there will be candy and coffee cake at breakfast, brunch-type food later on at my Uncle's house, and, last-but-not-least, the moment we've (I've) been waiting for....

US vs. MEXICO
1pm ET on ESPN2
World Cup Qualifying!

Well, I'm excited, anyway. :-P

And, I think a nice way to round out the day will be to hop online to see what [livejournal.com profile] seraphtrevs has posted since she's been a mass of entertainment for me the past few days. :^D

Happy Easter!

Woo-hoo! I got what I wanted for my birthday! The US Men's National Team just won 2-1 over Trinidad and Tobago in World Cup qualifying.

::dances::

I have finally broken down and gotten a cellphone. Well, it's another TracFone, but, hokey toot, it's digital. There's no antenna on it. My old TracFone was this clunky, analog thingy that I had in case of an emergency. A person could make one, 15-20 minute phone call on it before the battery drained down to unworkable levels. I feel so hi-tech. :^D

Totally unrelated, but I know what I want as an early birthday present: a USMNT win against whoever they're playing from group 2 on February 9th - just in time for my birthday. :^D :^D And maybe you could add Clint Dempsey to the list, too, omg. I can't believe I'm going to be soccer-less for the next three months.

In the meantime, there's Thanksgiving and Christmas to look forward to in the weeks ahead. And pumpkin pie - can't forget about the pie. (^___^)

The US is not a soccer nation, despite what the ads on ESPN2 would have you believe. If it were, I would not be having to follow the New England-Columbus match on MLSnet.com. Instead, I'd be watching the game on the television, commercial-free as it is Soccer Saturday. But no, college football is the name of the game here, showing on five or more different channels.

Grrr.

ETA: New England has scored the first goal! :^D :^D

Why is it that I must have such a ridiculously low tolerance to drugs? One not-quite-full cup of coffe (hazelnut!) at eight o'clock and three and half hours later I'm still twitching like a victim of Tourette Syndrome. And my BRAIN won't SHUT UP. Argh. It doesn't help that my mother insists on playing Jefferson Airplane on repeat all night (White Rabbit over and over...).

I'm swearing off caffeine. Alcohol (except on holidays, maybe) was first, Percocet was second (nasty audio and visual hallucinations...blurgh), and now caffeine. Okay, no caffeine after three o'clock. I'm not in college anymore...there's no reason for me to stay up all night, especially after having been up since six-thirty and spent the day in Lancaster browsing country crafts with Mom only to be caught in the downpour of the century and getting soaked to the skin and laughing because, really, we knew it was bound to happen and giggling because we had to sit in the car for fifteen minutes with the heat blasting to feel human again while waiting for the rain to let up enough to find a place to get a sandwich before our stomachs ate our spines in retaliation.

Of course, the Chicago-LA Galaxy game is on at midnight, and now I'll have plenty of nervous energy to last me through til two tomorrow morning before I crash into a metabolized-stimulant headache-haze of misery.

Go Chicago, anyway.

woot!

US Women Beat Greeks in Olympic Soccer

Nice!

Er...did they have to add that Greece barely recognizes women's soccer as a sport? Trying to take the fun out of it, aren't they. :^P
