I love my cat, honestly, but I still can't help but be disgusted and saddened when he kills (and then eats) a bird. I realize that it's instinct, and many would say, oh, it was only an English sparrow (I happen to love English sparrows because they are ordinary, working-class sort of birds), but it still saddens me. And it disgusts me when all that is left of the poor little fellow is a few tail feathers and a leg.
On a more positive note, a female ruby-throated hummingbird has been coming to our butterfly bush since Monday. This is the first time in the 12 years since we've lived here that my family has seen a hummingbird in our backyard. There was a near-ritualistic refilling of the hummingbird feeders that then took place Monday evening.
We do so love our backyard wildlife. :^)
