I've been doing a lot of work with ESL students since I began my job, and I was thinking that it'd be cool to make a mix CD of music in different languages for the students. From my own music collection, I've got songs in German, French, Japanese, Swahili (or Acoli, I don't know the difference), Hawaiian, Lakota Sioux, and Welsh. However, my students are from Bosnia, Lithuania, Slovakia, South Korea, Turkey, Ukraine, China, Egypt, and Liberia. Some of the Eastern European students speak Russian also, so songs from there would be pretty cool. I remember a long time ago being signed up with mp3.com so that I could download world music, but I'd get spam from them, so I was hoping to find another alternative. I also don't want to clutter up my computer with Kazaa or anything like that. Short of browsing Borders for inexpensive albums, I'm kind of at a loss.
I'm giving myself until "winter break" to get a CD put together, so we'll see.
Heh, all of this spawned from my wanting to bake cookies for them, but since Ramadan started, five of our students are fasting. How cruel would that be, bringing in food then? :^P
ETA: And the groans of disappointment coming from the living room? Make me so not want to subject myself to the stress of the Red Sox-Yankees game... and yet, it calls to me...
Equipment Status Log...?
Date: 2004-10-21 01:41 am (UTC)From:Hellooo. (Lord I need to find some new greetings. Oh oh, got one...) *waves* How have you been?
Just thought I would bring something that I use as a music resource. Now, it does involve a bit of downloading. But it's not like searching for hours and hours on the internet with search engines. It's Real Player's, Rhapsody. It's something like $10 a month. I do believe they have a 14 day free trial out there if you look online. And you can get time at places like Best Buy... But they have over 600,000 songs. And it's broken up into categories, and subcategories.
In the World/Reggae category, you can choose from, Africa, Asia, Australia, Celtic, Europe/Mediterranean, Indian, etc... And in the Europe/Mediterranean, there is Central/Eastern, Euro Pop, French Pop, Greece, Gypsy, Rai, Turkey, etc...
And then, after that, you can burn certain (not all of the) songs onto CD if you want. I do believe it's $1 a song if you can. Don't quote me on that because I never do that...
Then, if your interested, but would like to find out more of the music, give me a quick run down, and I can see what they have in that line, and if you can burn any of the songs in it.

P.S. When you said ESL, I was reminded of work, and the binder we call the ESL...

Date: 2004-10-23 11:47 pm (UTC)From:Thanks for the tip! I figure that anything is worth a try, and it'll be fun sampling different music. Sometimes I load up BBC Radio Scotland's show "Celtic Connections" which has some really great world music, but it's streaming so I don't think there's a way to save that music. But I'll definitely take a look at Real Player sometime. :^)
