And that's because I've been head-over-heels in love with Firefly and Serenity.
Probably everything's been said that's to say about how fantastically awesome this show is. I'm kinda glad I never knew about it while it was airing because it no doubt would have broken my heart when it was cancelled.
What's nearly as much of a crime, though, is the fact that, two short graphic novels and the movie novelization aside, there are no official books to continue the adventures of Serenity and its crew. And you know that they'd do well when it comes to selling them (well, okay, I don't know if that's true beyond me buying them all several times over to read myself and give to my friends and family - isn't that enough?). I mean, people have written and performed music from the show as well as tried their hands at making Jayne's hat (there's even this adorable sweatshirt jacket inspired by his hat). I just can't wrap my head around this, I guess.
I was rewatching the episode "Jaynestown" the other day when it slapped me upside the head how clever the writers were with a couple of the names in the episode. Remember how the crew is looking to meet their contact "Kessler" in the bar before we get to hear the folk song about Jayne? And later on we meet Jayne's old partner "Stitch Hessian"... and don'tcha know who the Hessians were? Hessians were German mercenaries who fought under the employ of the British during the Revolutionary War. I only remember that because "Kessler" is a family name on my dad's side... of a grandfather many-times-removed who was a Hessian that fought in the Battle of Trenton. :D!
I can't help but wonder who else on the writing staff knew that tidbit of Revolutionary War history... :)
