I finally watched the trailer for X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and it's got me pretty excited about the movie. I haven't read any articles or anything about the movie, so it'll be interesting to see the final product and how close it sticks to, or far it strays from, canon.

I'm especially curious if they plan on revealing that Wolverine's claws were a part of him before his skeleton was grafted with adamantium (the trailer kind of alluded to that, unless that was a dream sequence), thus showing that the claws were part of his mutation. I remember when that was revealed in the comics when I was a kid in the mid-'90s (part of the "Fatal Attractions" storyline, if I remember right - the issues in that series had nifty foil-hologram squares on each of the covers, and I think it was Wolverine #75? Maybe? I haven't kept up with the Marvel Comics universe since '97 or '98. I stopped reading the X-books around the time of the "Phalanx Saga", mostly because I just couldn't afford to buy them on the wages I earned working as a grunt at a theme park in high school). Anyway, I remember it being a big deal back then because until that point, most people assumed that Logan's only power was his incredible healing ability, and that it was the Weapon X program that gave him the claws. I'll never forget being totally grossed out when Magneto ripped the adamantium out of Wolverine, and his claws were left exposed as bone. Plus, you know, ouch.

At any rate, the movie trailer looks good. Sabertooth doesn't look much like the guy I remember from the comics (wasn't he blond?), but that really doesn't matter. It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Huh! I just realized that I never actually watched the third X-Men movie. I know that it's not supposed to be all that great, but... eh. I grew up reading comics; it doesn't take a whole lot to keep me happy. And I'm definitely not a stickler for canon when it comes to comics-to-movie stories. When you're dealing with several decades-worth of canon, I'll take a coherent story over a movie that's too crammed full of things to keep the fanboys happy, yet don't serve to move the narrative along. I always liked how they handled the first X-Men movie, even though it didn't follow canon much at all (and considering that X-Men is, essentially, an ensemble drama, it really could've been all over the place), and Iron Man was surprisingly good, too. New Years Eve I rewatched Batman Begins with my mom, who hadn't seen it before, and I was struck again with how well the story worked in that movie.

And finally, it'll be cool to see post-experiment berserker-Weapon X-Wolverine on the big screen. Only time will tell!
